This course explores how technology can be used to support reading for all learners. We will provide an overview of key concepts and strategies for using technology and universal design for learning (UDL) in reading instruction for students with SEND.
This will include the use of
• Digital reading materials, creation of digital libraries
• Assistive technology – immersive reader, speech to text, AI (including chat AI programmes)
• Educational apps – focusing on useful key apps
• Programmes to support interventions- Nessy, IDL, Word shark etc
We will discuss the role of technology in providing multiple means of accessibility, representation, expression, and engagement.
All participants will be supported to develop a deeper understanding of importance of using UDL principles to ensure accessibility and inclusivity across all areas.
Key Highlights:
Understanding Neurodiversity and SEND: Gain insights into the challenges by learners when developing reading skills. Including shared/sustained attention, theory of mind, executive functioning skills, prior knowledge, sensory and physical differences.
Technology as a Tool: Explore technologies available to support reading development, including assistive technologies, adaptive learning platforms, and immersive reading experiences.
Customisation and Personalisation: Explore how we can customise and personalise technology, Including the creation of digital libraries, supporting over learning, reading comprehension and fluency.
Accessibility Features: Discover built-in accessibility features in digital tools and platforms that enhance accessibility for learners with diverse needs.
Promoting Engagement and Motivation: Explore how technology can engage and motivate learners through interactive experiences, gamified learning activities, and multimedia resources. Focusing on useful apps and programmes (e.g., Nessy, IDL, Word shark, Literacy Gold, Clicker)
Monitoring and Progress Tracking: Explore the importance of monitoring progress and tracking reading development using technology, allowing educators to make data-informed decisions and provide targeted support.
All participants will be supported to develop a deeper understanding of importance of using UDL principles to ensure accessibility and inclusivity across all areas.
Dr Sarah Moseley: Sarah is a literacy and inclusion specialist focusing on empowering all learners, embracing neurodiversity and SEND. Sarah provides face to face or online training, consultancy, information and support for professionals and families from all sectors. Sarah is passionate about making a positive difference to the lives, attitudes and outcomes of those neurodiverse learners who may struggle to learn. Sarah has over 25 years’ knowledge and experience within special and mainstream education up to Headteacher level, as well as a solid research background rooted within the psychology of learning, that includes a Masters and PhD in Special Education. Sarah recently published a book on ‘Teaching Reading to All Learners’ and writes regular articles for several key industry publications. Throughout her career the one constant has been her belief in people and that everyone can succeed in the right environment, with the right support and equal access to opportunities. Sarah aims to bridge the gap between theory and learning, to create a culture where high expectations thrive, improving outcomes for all. Through the creation of inspirational learning opportunities, raising expectations, and removing barriers for all learners.
