DT: Subject Leader Network

1. New to DT subject leadership - October 5th

What is Design and Technology? Where do I begin?

Will there be a finished product? Should I buy kits? How do I know what’s happening across the school?

Do I need to be an expert?

These questions and more will be unpicked in this session which is aimed to support new to DT subject leaders develop the skills and expertise to become an effective leader and make an impact beyond their own classroom.

2. DT Practicalities and Progression (with a focus on textiles, mechanisms and structures) - Feburary 8th 2024

In this session, we’ll explore how we can ensure there is clear progression of skills being developed within lessons and across year groups.

With a focus on textiles, mechanisms and structures, we’ll also consider the practicalities of a DT lesson; purchasing resources,

recording evidence, building on prior learning and classroom management.

3. Quality assuring your DT curriculum- May 15th 2024

In this session we will look at how we can assess teaching and learning to quality assure the curriculum. This will include the use of books or portfolios to gauge how well pupils have deepened their understanding, are building on prior learning and able to use the skills acquired to tackle more complex challenges.

Pupil Book Study will be explained and modelled to demonstrate how to evaluate the impact of the curriculum through questioning, developing pupil conversation and reflecting on learning.

JANE RYDER Consultant & Lead for the Arts

Jane is an experienced teacher, Lead Practitioner, and also the Arts and Culture Lead at Sidegate Primary School in Ipswich. She leads arts and culture across the school, developing a breadth and creativity to the curriculum. She has successfully led the school to achieve ArtsMark Platinum (Sidegate was the first primary school in Suffolk to be accredited with Platinum) and is also a qualified Arts Award Adviser for Discover, Explore, Bronze, and Silver levels. She is the Lead CALSA (Culture and Arts Leader for Schools and Academies) for The Active Learning Trust, championing the arts across the MAT (currently 18 out of the 21 schools are on an Artsmark journey). as well as this Jane supports and networks with local schools and teachers. Jane became a Fellow of The Chartered College of Teaching in June 2020. She is also on the board of Ipswich LCEP and recognizes the importance of working together with arts and culture organizations, building sustainable and lasting relationships to support and enrich learning within schools. Sidegate Primary School has been the lead school in a £150,000, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Teacher Development funded project, designed to explore how the arts could be used to erode social disadvantage, with a specific focus on improving vocabulary. Jane’s leadership role throughout the project has been to facilitate the work with teachers, school leaders, and artist practitioners. She is keen to advance the legacy of this project beyond the nine participating schools. Jane is passionate about embedding the expressive arts within the school’s curricula and supporting other educators in putting that vision into practice. She believes that immersion in arts and culture activities provide opportunities for all children to develop the skills to be innovative, creative thinkers, who become active participants in their learning. She has developed a coaching and mentoring model to support others to identify opportunities to integrate music, dance, drama, and visual art, weaving these into the curriculum. Jane is dedicated to seeking new opportunities and avenues to embed learning through the arts.
