In this session we look at rich approaches to teaching comprehension. Attendees will experience a range of creative approaches to comprehension and leave the course with ‘take-aways’ to put into practice on their return to school.
During this course we will:
• Establish a shared understanding of the term Comprehension
• Explore the breadth of skills involved in comprehension
• Explore engaging and creative ways to teach comprehension
This course builds on the content covered in the English Subject Leader course delivered on 7th October 2025.

Rachel Clarke is the director of Primary English, a consultancy that has worked with teachers across the country for the past 11 years to improve all aspects of English teaching in the Primary Years. During 30 years in primary educa@on she has held the posi@ons of SENCO, English Subject Leader and Deputy Headteacher. Before establishing Primary English, Rachel worked as an English Consultant for Coventry Local Authority. She has a Masters Degree in Educa@on and was awarded a dis@nc@on for her research.
Rachel is a knowledgeable and mo@va@onal trainer who carefully facilitates the improved understanding, knowledge and skills of others. Rachel specialises in crea@ng bespoke support for schools based on the precise interpreta@on of their specific needs.
Rachel is an experienced writer and series editor. She is the author of over 10 educa@onal books, including Assess Fluency in Reading published by Collins and was part of the wri@ng team that produced the KS2 Guided Reading Handbooks for Collins Big Cat. She writes regularly for Teach Primary magazine, and co-wrote the Na@onal Literacy Trust's primary spoken language training.
