External Review of Governance
The DfE recommends that schools and MATs undertake an External Review of Governance (ERG) regularly.
An ERG offers an impartial perspective that highlights strengths and uncovers areas for development which may not be visible from within. It brings in expertise and experience that can help leaders reflect more deeply on how governance structures and behaviours are supporting the organisation’s vision and effectiveness. This kind of review can support accountability by providing a credible assessment to stakeholders and build confidence in decision-making by ensuring that roles, responsibilities and processes are clear and aligned with best practice.
In a changing educational landscape, an ERG can help ensure that governance remains fit for purpose and capable of responding to new challenges with clarity and confidence.

ERGs are a formative process that involve key stakeholders.  This valuable process is recognised by leaders in the sector:
“The strategic insights from the ERG have helped leaders including Executive Leaders, Senior Leaders, Governors and Trustees to fully understand some of the key strengths and areas for development in their academies and across the trust.  This has enabled us to become much more effective in planning our governance and leadership development programmes and succession plans for the future.”
