Course objectives:

To briefly examine the mastery approach and why it is so successful with all children

To explore the key skills a teaching assistant needs to support children who struggle with mathematics

To consider developing a teaching assistant tool kit

To look at some key resources every TA should have to hand in the classroom

Brief description of the course content:

This course looks at how CPA has benefited all children; in particular, lower achieving children. Each delegate will look at key areas of mathematics for children who find mathematics challenging.

The importance of mathematical vocabulary

Developing questioning skills

Number sense

Place value

Calculation (four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

Key resources such as dice, bead frames, bead strings, two coloured counters and proportional resources for place value will be demonstrated.

A list of suggested resources will also be shared. Post attendance, each delegate will be sent an access code to all the course materials, games and activities.
